...... In a country where the average cost of a wedding hovers around $25,000, there are any number of businesses focused on giving brides-to-be as many options as possible for spending her budget.

Gail Chung was one of those brides-to-be. While planning her California wedding from her New York apartment last year, she spent hours searching online for everything she needed.

“I found all of my vendors, the bridesmaids dresses, wedding favors, invitations and even the location, from the internet,” said Chung. “I had so many websites bookmarked on my computer, and my fiancé literally slept with our wedding folder under his pillow.”

After the nuptials, Chung just wasn’t ready to delete all the files she’d accumulated. Instead, Chung put them online, launching A Unique Union in April 2006. It is a wedding accessories site featuring “the best of the best” favors, bridesmaid gifts, jewelry and stationery for modern brides.

Part of A Unique Union’s appeal is the simple, elegant design of the site. There are no more than 30 items in any category, so as to not overwhelm already stressed-out brides.

“I wanted to create something a little more personal than the kitchen-sink sites that are out there, “ explained Chung. “We are not trying to be everything to everyone. When I was looking for invitations, for example, I had a general idea that I wanted something in bold, contrasting colors, but to find that I had to click through literally hundreds of pages of white on white invitations.”

Many of the items on the site are designed and handcrafted by artists in small quantities, which is optimal for a highly personalized, yet reasonably-priced shopping experience. Some of the products feature an ethnic twist, such as Asian-inspired letterpress cards. Others, like silk floral handbags, are ultra-romantic.

The website is updated as Chung finds new designers and artists. “I’m always looking for beautiful objects. Weddings never go out of style, but each wedding is different in its own little way.”
